And the winner of the 2019 Kitzbuehel downhill is… Dominik Paris
Jan 25, 2019·Alpine SkiingHe did it again. The South Tyrolean Dominik Paris managed to claim a third win in the Hahnenkamm downhill. He finishes ahead of Beat Feuz and surprise Otmar Striedinger in a special Kitzbuehel downhill moved to Friday due to a very bad weather forecast for Saturday.
Only six men have managed to win the Streif three times or more, and among them since today: Dominik Paris. With only 29 years, he could potentially join Franz Klammer (4 wins) or even Didier Cuche (5 wins) for the record. The Italian is in a great shape this season, starting with two podiums in North America, followed by a double win in the race week-end in his home country in Bormio. And since the beginning of the week in Kitzbuehel, he was in an excellent mood as he knew that this course and those conditions would fit his skiing.
It’s also the third time for Beat Feuz. The third time in second place on the Kitzbuehel downhill podium. The Swiss downhill globe winner of last season pushed hard down the Streif and laid down a nearly perfect run that satisfied him. “Of course I would love to win in Kitzbuehel, it’s the dream of every downhiller, but today again, Domme was unbeatable.” With this fifth podium in a row, Beat Feuz also extends his lead in the downhill standings and is now 100 points ahead of Dominik Paris.
The surprise of the day came from Otmar Striedinger, who claimed his second podium in career, more than five year after his first success in the super-g in Beaver Creek. The 27 years young Austrian proved many times that his ground speed was there, laying down strong performances in the trainings. Unfortunately, so far this season, he hadn’t managed to earn a Top 15 result on race days. With this third place in the Kitzbuehel downhill, Striedinger shows that he’s back in the fight and sits in 17th position in the downhill standings, his best rank in career so far.
Tomorrow, the Hahnenkamm races will go on with the classical slalom on the Ganslern course. More snow is expected overnight, but the Kitzbuehler course crews are ready and hope to hold the two runs as scheduled at 09:30 and 12:30.
