Four in a row for unstoppable Goggia
Jan 23, 2021·Alpine SkiingSofia Goggia continued to be in a class of her own in the downhill, earning her fourth straight victory in the discipline at today’s Audi FIS World Cup race in Crans Montana.
Goggia led a very strong Italian women’s speed team, which claimed three of the top four positions. Elena Curtoni earned third place 0.60 seconds behind Goggia, while 23 year-old Laura Pirovano earned her career-best finish in fourth place.
Spoiling the Italian triumph was Lara Gut-Behrami, who gave the Swiss fans reason to celebrate after a disappointing day yesterday. Gut-Behrami, last year’s double winner in Crans Montana rebounded from a sub-par outing yesterday to take second place, just 0.27 behind Goggia. The Swiss also had a good outing today as a team placing four athletes in the top-10 with Jasmina Suter in sixth, Corinne Suter in eighth and Michelle Gisin rounding out the top-10.
But once again, it was Goggia who was the star of the day and able to overcome two very different races with two very different course conditions.
“Mentally, I went into today like yesterday's win was only a training run,” said Goggia after the race. “It helped my come in fresh and without any expectations, which helped today.”
Thanks to her two victories this weekend, Goggia now sits in third place in the overall cup standings and naturally with the clear lead in the season downhill standings. She will have the opportunity to close the overall gap with tomorrow’s super-G and additionally a super-G and downhill next weekend in Garmisch-Partenkirchen before her home World Championships in Cortina kick off at the start of February.
