Marco Odermatt (SUI/Stöckli) has clinched the Super G Crystal Globe for a fourth consecutive time in the Audi FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup without having to take to the slopes after today's race in Courchevel was cancelled.
The Super G meet was originally scheduled for Saturday 14th March but was cancelled due to unfavourable conditions.
An early decision was made today on the race by the organisers following persistent snowfall overnight which continued right through until this morning, as FIS chief race director, Markus Waldner explained.
"We got a lot of snow overnight, which just stopped around 6am/6.30am," he said.
"The organisers worked all night trying to push the snow out, but we had a fresh layer of about 30 centimetres, and the surface was not solid anymore, dead snow breaks down everywhere, so it was impossible to try and think about the race."
He added: “This is the last weekend before the finals in Lillehammer, so unfortunately it cannot be rescheduled. I have just heard that it is another globe for Odi, so congratulations to him.
"We will see you guys in Norway."
Odermatt has now claimed the Crystal Globe in Super G for a fourth year in a row. The trophy is the third Odermatt has won this year in the competition after he secured the Overall and Downhill Crystal Globes on Friday following a third place finish in Courchevel.
Odermatt came into today's race with an 158-point lead over his nearest challenger in the Super G standings, Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT/Head).
His advantage was built up through wins in the competition opener at Copper Mountain, USA in November, and then in Kitzbühel, Austria in January, with Kriechmayr having taken the spoils in Beaver Creek, USA in December.
Unfortunately for Kriechmayr, his hopes of cutting the gap to his rival were ended due to conditions outwith his control as the Courchevel snow sealed what look like an inevitable success for Odermatt.
The final race of the Audi FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Super G competition takes place in Kvitfjell, Norway next Sunday 22nd March.
