As each season draws to a close the focus shifts from World Cup wins or Tour de Ski victories to final World Cup standings. Whether it be the sprint, distance or overall titles each detail is studied. The points already gained, the points that are left and who still has a shot, become the stories of the spring World Cup period. This season 4 of the 6 crystal globes were still up for grabs on the final weekend in Falun with 3 decided during the final competition of the 2017-2018 year. Cross-country skiing originated in Fennoscandian countries in prehistoric times. It was still widely practiced in the 19th century as a way of moving from place to place in winter. As a sport, cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group. Modern cross-country ski competition is experiencing a revolution that is resulting in greater compatibility with audiences which began with the addition of the Sprint event to the World Cup and Olympic competitions in 2002.
