Lugnet's ski stadium was the place to be in Falun, SWE this morning as the worlds elite of Cross-Country gathered for the 15km F mass start. The format had to be adapted previousely from a 30km individual start as the snow conditions did not allow a longer loop. The athletes adapted themselves well with this change and competed a fair and controlled competition along the 2.7km course.

On the result list, Russian and Norwegian athletes take in the top-8 spots as they took the role as the pace makers for the 78 starters right from the start. Already after the first lap the field was separated apart and the top group consisted of around 30 successors. In the meantime, Simen Hegstad Krüger and Hans Christer Holund had taken over the lead and each tried to tear away from the group.

In the final lap, Alexander Bolshunov clearly regained the lead and set out for the grand finish. Only Sjur Roethe managed to follow up on the current Overall World Cup leader. Bolshunov and Roethe delivered a grand final along the stretch towards the finish line. Ivan Yahimushkin, who powerfully made his way from the back of the successor group to the front runners, managed to pull away and crossed the finish line in 3rd position before Andrey Melnichenko and Hans Christer Holund who had an unfortunate small fall in the famous banked horseshoe turn before the final climb.

“Honestly I was not so happy when the format was changed to a mass start. Because I think when you compete a 30km individual start, you can show your real character, you compete alone and you have to fight with yourself all the way. But then I realized that there will be two bonus points in the new format and I knew there was a good possibility to catch some additional points. Now after the race, I have to say that it was a good race after all."Alexander Bolshunov
Alexander Bolshunov remains unbeatable and so extends his lead in the distance World Cup and overall World Cup ranking with todays win. wow. 🔥 ⁣#fiscrosscountry
“It was a tough race today. I was expecting a lot of guys fighting together in the top spots today and at least 20 to 30 guys sprinting in the last uphill but it turned out totally different. We made a good plan yesterday and ended with three guys in the front with Hans Christer Holund. I am going to give him a big hug today because he was really strong and he made the race - not only for me and Bolshunov but also for all the viewers, and it surely must have been a fun race to watch. When it was changed to a mass start, at first I thought that the track was is going to be too narrow but it was actually ok and I think the weather helped as well for good snow conditions. I would have liked to do the 30km of course but I think in the end the 15km was a really fair race and that is the most important thing."Sjur Roethe
