Bakuriani 2023 World Championships set for Saturday Opening Ceremony
Feb 18, 2023·Freeski Park & PipeThe biggest event of the 2022/23 FIS World Cup season - and the biggest sporting event in Georgia’s history as a nation - is upon us, as from 16 February to 5 March we’ll be on site in the Lesser Caucasus Mountains for the Bakuriani 2023 FIS Freestyle Ski, Snowboard and Freeski World Championships.
After a fragmented 2021 World Championships season where moguls and aerials, ski and snowboard cross, alpine snowboard and snowboard park & pipe/freeski all ended up in different venues due to covid-19 restrictions in China (where the 2021 World Championships were originially scheduled to be held at Zhangjiakou), for 2023 all the Freestyle, Snowboard and Freeski events are back together at at one locale. With a fresh organiser in place and a deeply committed team who have for the last five years been putting together all the pieces for a World Championships to remember.
The Bakuriani 2023 World Championships will be split between two main venues located just 15 minutes apart, with the slopestyle, big air, halfpipe, parallel and cross competitions stadiums situated at Didveli resort, while moguls and aerials will be contested just down the valley at the Kokhta ski area.
With some 700 athletes from 40+ nations set to descend upon Bakuriani in the coming weeks - along with coaches, trainers, support staff, families and fans - this truly is the largest sporting event ever to be held in Georgia. And, with a huge investment of time, energy and resources by the Bakuriani 2023 Organising Committee, the Georgian government, and corporate partners of the World Championships with all parties coming together to ensure a world-class showcase of ski and snowboard action in an eager and developing snow sports nation, we expect the storylines big and small to be compelling throughout the next 16 days of world champs competition.
While on-piste action in Bakuriani begins on Thursday, 16 February with aerials training, things really get underway on Saturday, 18 February, where the Bakuriani 2023 Opening Ceremony will mark the official starting point for the 30 World Championships competitions set to take place over the next 16 days of action here in Georgia.
We’ll be posting where-to-watch and livestream info on our social channels before finals time for each competition throughout Bakuriani 2023, so follow @fissnowboard and @fisfreestyle on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for updates (and @fis.ski on TikTok for TikTok stuff) so you don’t miss any action.
