This past weekend at Sommet Saint-Sauveur, the story of one of freestyle skiing’s greatest athletes came full circle. In front of a home crowd, on a course that helped shape his journey, Mikaël Kingsbury took his final competition run, closing a career that redefined excellence in moguls skiing.
The moment carried even more weight as it unfolded during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Freestyle Canada. Fifty years after the first Canadian National Freestyle Skiing Championships in 1976 at Camp Fortune, the sport returned to its roots, bringing together generations of athletes, coaches, and fans to celebrate its evolution. From ballet and aerials to today’s high speed, high precision moguls and dual moguls, the journey of freestyle skiing in Canada has been one of constant progression. Kingsbury has been at the center of that story.
It was only fitting that he did more than just say goodbye. Kingsbury claimed victory in both Moguls and Dual Moguls at Sommet Saint-Sauveur, a final reminder of the standard he has set for over a decade. Dominant, precise, and relentlessly consistent, he leaves competition the same way he defined it.
This season captured everything that defines his career. Despite battling injury, he reached a historic milestone with his 100th World Cup victory on home snow in Val Saint-Côme, a moment that felt both symbolic and deeply personal. Weeks later, at the Olympic Winter Games, he added two more medals to his collection, including becoming the first ever Olympic gold medallist in Dual Moguls. A perfect way to close a remarkable journey.
Beyond the titles, medals, and records, Kingsbury’s legacy goes further. He elevated the sport, pushed progression, and inspired a generation. For years, he was the benchmark.
As the celebrations came to an end and the crowd paid tribute, it was clear this was more than a retirement. It was the closing of a defining chapter in freestyle skiing.
From everyone across the FIS Freestyle family, thank you.
Wishing you all the best for what comes next.
