General Information
With a population of 1.800.000, Sapporo is the fourth-largest city of Japan and located on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and the capital of the Hokkaido Prefecture. Sapporo is known for hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics and the city's annual Yuki Matsuri, the Sapporo Snow Festival which draws more than two million tourists from all over the world. Sapporo is located in the southwest part of Ishikari Plain on the Toyohira River, a tributary stream of the Ishikari River. Roadways in the urban district are laid to make grid plan road. The western and southern part of Sapporo are occupied by a number of mountains including Mount Teine, Maruyama, and Mount Moiwa.
The venue
The first K 60 hill was constructed in Sapporo in 1931 but destoyed in the Second World War. It was reconstructed in 1952 as a K 80 hill. The whole area underwent a major overhaul leading up to the 1972 Olympic Games and so the K 100 Ōkurayama hill and an accompanying stadium for 50.000 spectators were built. The hill underwent another round of reconstructions for the World Championships in 2007 which left the HS 134 its current form.
The cross-country venue Shirahatayama, also a venue of the World Championships in 2007, is locted on the opposite side of the city.
