Youth Cup: Winners from 4 nations shine on day 2
Aug 31, 2018·Nordic CombinedIn one of the most diverse Youth Cup results ever, winner from four different nations shone in the four different categories held in Trondheim on the final day of the FIS Youth Cup season 2017/18. Germany, Norway, Italy and Poland had their athletes on the top steps of the podiums.
Marie Nähring ended a fable weekend in the Youth I Girls category with a second victory that catapulted her on the top step of the overall rankings as well. The German beat Italy’s Annika Sieff and Austria’s Lisa Hirner by eleven and 16 seconds in the end. Jumping winner Thea Minyan Byørseth reached the fifth rank in the final result list
Also Gyda Westvold Hansen was able to celebrate twice this weekend. The Norwegian claimed also the the second victory in the Youth II Girls category. This time, Daniela Dejori (ITA) and Estonia’s Trinu Hausenberg claimed positions two and three, finishing 25 and 46 seconds after Westvold Hansen.
Italian Iacopo Bortolas managed to climb up one more step on the podium after his second place on Tuesday. Claiming the jumping win earlier in the day, Bortolas was not to be stopped on the cross-country track and followed on the heels of the older Youth II Boys leader Andrjez Sczczechowicz. Bortolas crossed the finish line 28 seconds before Tuesday’s winner Johan Fredrik Orset, who had the fastest skiing time of the day. The third place went to Evan Nichols from the USA. Nichols finished 29 seconds after Bortolas.
In the Youth II Boys category, Andrzej Szczechowicz celebrated a similar start - finish victory after charging around the 4.5 km course. The Polish athlete held off a double Norwegian pack of pursuers with Trym Brandsegg-Lein taking the second place (+0:22) and Emil Ottesen adding a third place to his total points tally, finishing 27 seconds after the winner.
