Ryota Yamamoto was in the lead after the Ski Jumping competition in Schonach (GER) this morning.
In bright sunshine yesterday’s PCR winner reached 101.5 meters (139.4 pts) at the Langenwaldschanze HS100 and took the lead. He was therefore the first one to start into the 10 km race this afternoon.
Rank 2 after jumping went to his Japanese team mate Yoshito Watabe, who jumped the furthest distance of the day with 102 meters (139.1 pts) and went into the course only 1 second after Yamamoto.
Kristjan Ilves (101 mts, 138.3 pts) placed third, only 4 seconds behind the leader.
With a total of 15 athletes starting within the first minute, a tight fight for the podium could be expected.
Yamamoto fell back in the first kilometer, so after 1.2 km Yoshito Watabe took the lead, closely followed by Ilves (+1.3 sec), Johannes Lamparter (+3.3 sec) and Jens Luraas Oftebro (+3.9 sec).
After 2.5km the Overall World Cup leader from Austria took the lead but couldn't shake off his pursuers.
With Ilkka Herola (+18.5 sec), another strong skier rushed up from behind, who made speed together with Mario Seidl (+19 sec) and caught up with Yamamoto in the second lap.
In the leading group, Watabe was unable to follow the strong performance of his competitors and fell back after 5km, while Herola and Seidl continued to put the pressure on and constantly reduced the gap to the leaders. The Finn put everything on one card in the last lap and pulled away, so that at 8.7 km he was only 15.5 seconds behind the leading group.
In the end he didn't manage to catch up with the top 3.
While Oftebro took the win, Lamparter (+8.1sec) was second and Kristjan Ilves (+16.8sec) took his first podium of the season as third.
