Back-to-back Europa Cup races were held this past Saturday and Sunday at the Crosspark Reiteralm (AUT) with a big participation of international athletes, who also usually compete on World Cup level and took the chance to get some racing action in before the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour continues in the new year.

Katrin Ofner with strong performance on the women’s side

On the women’s side, Austria’s Katrin Ofner, who had claimed her maiden win and won the last World Cup competition in Val Thorens (FRA) before the Christmas break, showed a very strong performance on both race days.

On Saturday, it was however Germany’s young talent Daniela Maier, who had been getting stronger with every race this season and even claimed second place at the last World Cup race in Val Thorens (FRA), winning the first competition day in Reiteralm ahead of home hero Katrin Ofner (AUT) and Italy’s Lucrezia Fantelli, who promises to be also one to watch out for in the near future.

On Sunday, Ofner went one step further and dominated the second Europa Cup race, claiming the win in the end ahead of Lucrezia Fantelli (ITA), also taking a back-to-back podium that weekend, and Austrian team mate Christina Foedermayr rounding out the podium.

German podium party on the men’s side

At the men’s competition, the German team showed one hell of a dominant performance with no two, but three Germans claiming 1-2-3. No other, but Tim Hronek took the win on Saturday at his comeback race, returning after a hand injury that occurred at training in September, ahead of team mates Cornel Renn and Niklas Bachsleitner, taking second and third place respectively.

The German podium party was planned to continue on the second race day, however one certain American gentleman hat something against that plan. Tyler Wallsch destroyed that German dream, hopping onto the podium into third place behind winner Tobias Mueller and double-second-place claimer Cornel Renn.

After those successful Europa Cup races at the beginning of the year, ski cross athletes are ready to continue the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup tour in Sweden’s Idre Fjäll for the premiere of the “Idre Fjäll TRE” races, which will consist of one ski cross sprint event on Wednesday, January 20th, followed by back-to-back full-length-races on Saturday, Jan 23 and Sunday, Jan 24.

We are excited, and hopefully you are too!
