Preview - the Ski Flying World Championships in Austria

A very special highlight is on the agenda for the world's best ski jumpers next weekend.
The FIS Ski Flying World Championships on the Kulm. We explain the most important terms and have the exact schedule.

The Ski Flying World Championships take place every two years. This year, the legendary Kulm in Austria is the venue. Just under three hours' drive west of Vienna, in Styria, you will find the towns of Bad Mitterndorf and Tauplitz and between these two towns is the gigantic 235-HS ski flying hill.

Special at the Ski Flying World Championships: there are 4 competition rounds. Two on Friday and two on Saturday. The athlete with the most points from all four rounds is crowned Ski Flying World Champion.
The last time this was Marius Lindvik 2022 in Vikersund (NOR) and before that Karl Geiger 2020 in Planica (SLO). The team competition with four athletes per team/nation will then follow on Sunday.

Ski jumping - ski flying / the difference

Ski flying can only be done on a few (currently 4) ski jumps, the ski flying hills.

The hills are larger (inrun and landing slope), the speeds are higher (about 90 KM/h to 100 KM/h) and it goes further, much further.
While you can jump about 150 meters on a large ski jump, the record on the ski flying hill (Monsterbakken) in Vikersund is 253.5 meters. The record at Kulm currently stands at 244 meters (Peter Prevc).

What is the Kulm?

The term Kulm actually stands for "mountain top", but this mountain with the name Kulmkogel or this mountain top in Tauplitz, Styria (Marktgemeinde of Bad Mitterndorf), is particularly special.

It is home to one of the few ski jumping hills in the world. Planica (SLO), Oberstdorf (GER), Vikersund (NOR) and "der Kulm" are the four ski flying hills on which the Ski Flying World Cups and Ski Flying World Championships are held today.
