Domen Prevc tops podium for fifth consecutive World Cup

World champion Domen Prevc (SLO) joined an illustrious list of legendary male ski jumpers to have attained five or more World Cup wins in a row with his latest success coming in a highly competitive contest in Engelberg (SUI).
The Slovenian was in third at the halfway stage, with Olympic champion Ryoyu Kobayashi and Japanese team-mate Ren Nikaido holding the respective spots of one and two.
Prevc’s second round jump, of 142m, was a significant improvement on his effort of 138.5m in the opener, but there was a degree of fortune to his ultimate victory.
With the weather conditions deteriorating, race officials made the correct decision to hold first round leader Kobayashi, who was the last athletes to jump, at the top of the hill.
The delay, combined with stronger tailwinds and a slightly poorer jump execution ultimately saw the Japanese star drop to six and help Prevc to his latest success.
The 26-year-old, who is enjoying the best World Cup season of his career this season, finished with a total of 330.2 points from his two jumps.
Felix Hoffmann (GER) rose two places between the rounds to place second (326.4pts) and record his greatest-ever result in the competition, with Nikaido completing the top-three with 318.1pts.
Other athletes to attain life-time best finishes included Jonas Schuster (AUT) and teenager Jason Colby (USA), who finished fifth and seventh respectively.
Prevc, who is just the tenth male ski jumper in history to win five World Cup events in a row, now leads the overall World Cup standings by 219 points, with a total of 770pts. Kobayashi is second (551pts) and Anze Lanisek (SLO) in third (488pts).
“It was really difficult today and I mean I’m really lucky all that things happening to me right now,” said Prevc, who had placed 22nd in qualification on Friday.
“I made a mistake yesterday (in qualifying) so I was more focused today because I know I shouldn’t take things for granted.
“I needed two good jumps and I felt really good today, explosive and powerful.
Prevc continued; “It was tricky with the wind coming and going, like 3m then, 1m backwind and for ski jumpers that makes a huge difference, but I’m very happy.”
Hoffmann, who topped the standings after training, the trial run and qualification says he is "enjoying every jump" right now.
"I'm very happy with the result after showing good performances yesterday and then showing real determination in the air in the second round today to finish really well."
Nikaido stated he was "glad" to achieve a top-three result in an event which experienced "challing tail winds" and will 'try his hardest' on Sunday.
The field will return to action for Engelberg’s second men’s World Cup on 21 December, with Prevc now aiming to become only the sixth man to win six consecutive events at this level in a row.
