Jan 25, 2020·Snowboard AlpineThe first ever World Cup competition on the brand new venue in Piancavallo (ITA) went down in style with Julie Zogg (SUI) and Andreas Prommegger (AUT) finishing with victories to wrap un an exciting day of the finest parallel slalom racing action.
After hosting a successful Italian national championships last season, Piancavallo have been added as one of four new venues on World Cup tour for 2019/20 season. And on Saturday the local organisers proved yet once again that Piancavallo is a host worth top-level alpine snowboard competition.
In the women’s event it was the Swiss rider Zogg, who raced to victory for her second PSL win in the current World Cup campaign. Zogg was unstoppable on Saturday, besting the likes of Gong Naiying (CHN), Daniela Ulbling (AUT) and Elizaveta Salikhova (RUS) on her way to the big final.
In the final heat of women’s competition Zogg edged out Selina Joerg (GER) by .12 sec to take another 1000 points into the PSL World Cup standing. With the win in Piancavallo, Zogg increased her advantage over second Ramona Theresa Hofmeister (GER) to more than 700 points and only two more parallel slalom races coming up in 2020.
“It’s a great race and I’m really happy about taking the win today,” said Zogg, “It’s always fun to compete on new venues and the slope in Piancavallo is really good. I’m definitely looking forward to come back here in the future.”
Selina Joerg finished the competition in second place, while Ramona Theresa Hofmeister rounded out the women’s podium in third place, after coming victorious in the small final against Elizaveta Salikhova.
Victory on the men’s side of the competition went to Austria’s Andreas Prommegger, who showed some impressive riding while going against strong competition including Mirko Felicetti (ITA), Daniele Bagozza (ITA), Stefan Baumeister (GER) and Rolan Fischnaller (ITA) in the final matchup of the day.
Prommegger won the big final against Fischnaller after the duo was going toe-to-teo for the entire length of the course. And despite all the efforts from the Italian veteran, Prommegger managed to cross the finish line with .3 sec advantage and take his second victory of the season.
“Victory is always great, but especially on this difficult slope today,” said Prommegger, “The conditions were great, but it was a pretty close racing today. First in the small final I was the lucky one and then final with “Fisch” (Rolland Fischnaller) is always really tough.”
“I had not too many good results in the past so victory today is perfect,” he continued, “It was great riding today, it was fun. Thanks to the organisers, because they prepared a perfect slope for these conditions. And we had a great audience so I’m very thankful.”
Fischnaller finished the competition behind Prommegger in second place for his fourth top-3 finish in 2019/20 World Cup season.
With the win on Saturday Prommegger jumped atop the PSL World Cup ranking with 2260 points, while Fischnaller moved into second place with 1750 points following his runner-up finish in Piancavallo.
