Corvatsch competitions close out European Cup season

The final events of the 2020/21 FIS Snowboard Park & Pipe and FIS Freeski European Cup calendar took place from Friday to Tuesday at Switzerland’s Corvatsch resort, where impressive fields of international athletes duked it out for the season’s final precious FIS points in big air and slopestyle competitions.
Austrian’s sweep top of podium in Corvatsch freeski competitions
Austria ruled the weekend in Freeski competition at Corvatsch, lead by 21 year-old Lara Wolf. Wolf claimed victory in both the slopestyle and big air events in Switzerland to close out the season as the European Cup overall champion for women’s big air and slopestyle with 400 points.
Second place behind Wolf on the women’s final BA and SS standings was Italy’s Elisa Maria Nakab, while Lou Barin of France rounded out the top three in third.
On the men’s side of things it was also all Austria atop the podium, first with Lukas Muellauer claiming the victory in the slopestyle competition, then with Sam Baumgartner taking the win in Sunday’s big air competition. Both Muellauer and Bamgartner earned two podiums apiece on the weekend, with Muellauer earning third place in big air competition, and Baumgartner taking second just behind his teammate in the slopestyle.
With so many podiums between the two Austrian skiers to finish the season, the pair would end up one-two atop the men’s 2020/21 European Cup standings, with Baumgartner taking top spot with 360 points, followed closely by Muellauer and his 320 points. Third overall, meanwhile, went to Switzerland’s Nils Ryner.
Peperkamp and Farrell take Corvatsch wins, Swiss rider sweep men’s season podium
Over on the snowboard side of things, there was a bit of a letdown when the men’s big air competition scheduled for Sunday was unfortunately cancelled due to inclement that developed throughout the day.
However, better weather on Sunday morning meant that the women’s big air competition was able to take place, with 16 year-old Dutch rider Melissa Peperkamp earning the fifth European Cup win of her young career.
Peperkamp then followed her big air win up with the slopestyle victory on Tuesday, and with those two wins the up-and-comer was able to lock down top spot on the women’s European Cup big air and slopestyle standings on the snowboard side of things with 440 points - guaranteeing her spot for next year’s World Cup season in the process.
Second place behind Peperkamp in Tuesday’s slopestyle competition was, Ariane Burri, with that result helping the 21 year-old also earn second overall on the women’s final standings. Third place overall, meanwhile, went to 14 year-old Mia Brookes of Great Britain, who also earned a podium on the weekend in Corvatsch by finishing third in the big air competition.
Though the men’s big air was cancelled, the slopestyle competition went down with in a big way on the exceptional Corvatsch course on Tuesday, with a pair of standout US riders in Lyon Farrell and Sean Fitzimons finishing in first and second, respectively, followed by Moritz Boll of the host Swiss squad in third.
Those top results wouldn’t be enough to land the US riders in the season’s European Cup top three, however, as Swiss riders swept he big air and slopestyle overall podium. Corvatsch local Nicolas Huber lead the way with 280 points, followed closely by Boll with 270 and then Jonas Junker with 260 points.
