Slopestyle World Cup finals find new home in Silvaplana

Some exciting news from Switzerland today, as we’re able to announce that the 2020/21 FIS Snowboard slopestyle World Cup finals have been rescheduled to take place for 27th to 28th of March in Silvaplana at Corvatsch resort, with qualifications taking place on the 27th and finals on the 28th.
After last week’s unfortunate news that Czech Snowboard and the local organising committee in Spindleruv Mlyn would not be able to hold the slopestyle finals as originally planned due to COVID-19 restrictions in the region, the status of the season-ending World Cup slopestyle competition was put into question.
However, through some quick work and the excellent support of the local organisers in Silvaplana and Corvatsch, along with Swiss Snowboard, Swiss Freeski, and the supportive local authorities in the canton of Graubünden, an agreement was reached to hold snowboard competition in conjunction with the FIS Freeski slopestyle World Cup already slated to take place during last weekend in March there in Silvaplana.
Silvaplana has a long and impressive history as a freeski competition venue, having served as World Cup host in every season dating back to 2012/13 except for last year, when the event was cancelled due to the developing COVID-19 situation. This year’s competition marks the eighth FIS Freeski World Cup competition to take to the slopes of Corvatsch, and with that proven track record - along with their expertly designed and built slopestyle course - finding a home for the final slopestyle World Cup at the venue is truly an ideal scenario.
“We are delighted that we have received the FIS contract to take over the canceled slopestyle World Cup final originally scheduled for the Czech Republic. Together with the local organising committee we have done everything we can to offer the athletes a platform. Thanks to the excellent conditions provided by the Corvatsch team and the park crew, a takeover is even possible,” said Sacha Giger, Director Freestyle Ski, Snowboard & Telemark at Swiss-Ski.
Markus Moser, the CEO of Corvatsch AG, was similarly enthusiastic about the addition of snowboard competition to the programme in Silvaplana.
“Thanks to the uncomplicated support of all involved partners and a team on site that has a lot of experience in the implementation of slopestyle World Cup events, we are able to handle the short-term takeover of the FIS Snowboard slopestyle World Cup finals,” said Moser. “The elaborate COVID-10 protection concept and the test program of the canton of Graubünden also give us the necessary security to hold these events. We look forward to welcoming the world's best snowboarders to the Engadin and Corvatsch!”
As with all World Cup competitions taking place this season, extensive health and safety measures will be in place in Silvaplana to ensure a smooth and healthy competition for all athletes, team staff, workers and volunteers on site. With the confirmation of the Silvaplana competition, along with the recent addition to the calendar of the Aspen (USA) slopestyle World Cup on from 19th - 20th of March, and the already completed Laax Open slopestyle World Cup, we should see three completed competitions on this season’s slopestyle calendar, ensuring a World Cup champion can be declared and the crystal globes awarded to the season’s top woman and man.
