Telemark World Cup opens in Carezza (ITA)
Jan 20, 2023·TelemarkAfter the opening of the Telemark World Cup in France had to be moved ude to poor snow conditions, the 2022-23 season finally got underway with a World Cup stage in Carezza (ITA).
Carezza held two Sprint raceson 18-19 January and the athletes delivered an ecellent show in the beautifull Dolomites region, home of Italian star Raphaël Mahlknecht.
The first day the red Swiss telemark squad already announced the colour for the women with the win of Amélie Wenger-Reymond for her return to competition after a year off. Martina Wyss (SUI) finished second and Goril Strom Eriksen (NOR) earned a brillant third place. In the men's category, we didn’t expected a podium without Bastien Dayer (SUI). Indeed the overall 2022 Globe winner missed the first podium of the year. The Swiss squad had to face with a French team in great shape. Noé Claye (FRA) and Elie Nabot (FRA) finished respectively first and second. Nicolas Michel (SUI) completed the podium.
For the second Sprint race on Thursday, the Swiss women swept the podium with Amélie Wenger-Reymond winning ahead of Martina Wyss and Béatrice Zimmermann. The telemark maestro Bastien Dayer (SUI) won th men's competition (SUI) topping Trym Nygaard Loeken (NOR) and Elie Nabot (FRA).
Honorable mentions go to Jazmin Taylor (GBR), who ended fourth in both races. We can expect that for the next races Béatrice Zimmermann (SUI), Jasmin Taylor (GBR), Argeline Tan-Bouquet (FRA) and Goril Strom Eriksen (NOR) are all on par to fight for the third place.
For the men these first two races in Carezza points that everything is possible for the top three between Swiss (Dayer and Michel), France (Claye,Nabot and Sillon) and Norway (Loeken). But for sure Dayer already showed that he will be the « judge and arbiter » for the podium for his last World Cup season.
The next World Cup races will be held in Melchsee Frutt (SUI) with a classic and two parallel sprint races on 27th-29th January.
