FIS Rollerski World Cup starts with 200m Sprint

FIS Rollerski World Cup 2021 started in Banská Bystrica (SVK) on Friday afternoon with the Sprint qualifications on the scenic town square. The busy race weekend was scheduled with three competitions - Sprints on Friday, mass start on Saturday and the ind. mountain climb on Sunday. All competitions were held for the four categories junior women and men as well as senior women and men.
Italian junior racer Sabrina Borettaz took the first victory of the weekend at the Sprint Finals. Samanta Krampe from Latvia and Marianna Klementova from Slovakia took the second and third spot. In the junior mens category, Pavel Makarov from Russia took the win. Riccardo Munari from Italy got second and local Jachym Cenek raced on the third position. With two Slovakian junior racers on the third spot in each junior category, the team can record an excellent performance on this Sprint day.
Also in the senior categories, especially one Slovakian athlete belonged to the favourites. Local Alena Prochazkova finished first in qualification. In the finals, she faced Linn Soemeskar from Sweden and the two gave each other a thrilling duel, so the final results were decided by a photo finish. Soemskar won the duel close up before Prochazkova in second and Sandra Schuetzova from Czech Republic in third.
The first senior race of the men was won by Emanuele Becchis from Italy who fought well against Ramio Viganz from Italy who ended in second place. The last podium spot was taken by Jostein Olafsen from Norway.
Spectators were allowed to the event with obeying to the given Covid prevention protocols. The atmosphere at SNP Square was therefore excellent as the audience was very encouraging.
After the end of the race, opening of the event took place. The mayor of Banská Bystrica, Ján Nosko and the president of Sovak Ski Association, Ivan Ivanič gave opening speeches.
